A public-benefit organisation has donated R4 million in medical equipment to Groote Schuur Hospital.
The equipment from the South African Medical and Education (SAME) Foundation will be used in the intensive care unit.
The foundation’s chief executive Trevor Pols said they wanted to help health-care facilities that were under mounting pressure because of Covid-19.
“The pandemic has taken an already overburdened and under-resourced system and forced it to adapt to, and facilitate, an increase in patients needing emergency lifesaving medical treatment.”
The foundation was spending R20 million to help health facilities around the country fight Covid-19, he said.
“We will continue to assist health-care facilities through this time of emergency to the best of our ability and hope that the contribution to Groote Schuur Hospital makes a significant difference.”
Meanwhile a medical-supply chain has donated R500 000 worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the hospital’s staff.
Groote Schuur’s medical manager, Dr Belinda Jacobs, said: “Their contributions make a big difference so that we can continue to provide quality care to all patients.”
