A place of healing turned into a place of horror when a 63-year-old man died in a fire at Groote Schuur hospital on Sunday January 7.
The fire engulfed part of Ward G17 and while hospital staff evacuated patients, one man sustained serious burns and died on Sunday night.
Theo Layne, the City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, said the cause of the fire remains unknown and police are investigating.
He said they responded to the fire at 10.30pm. One bed and bedside table were damaged.
Groote Schuur Hospital spokesperson, Alaric Jacobs said staff attempted to extinguish the fire while they waited for help.
“The Western Cape Government Health and Groote Schuur Hospital Management express their sincerest condolences to the family of the patient who passed away. All efforts are being made to establish contact with the family of the deceased and trauma counselling will be offered,” said Mr Jacobs.
