Cape Town has been honoured that Medecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has opened an office in our city. It is wonderful to learn that MSF have already played an important role in the battle against HIV and Aids in South Africa over the past decades. Now they have committed to tackling another scourge to our communities, that of tuberculosis.
Tatler reporter John Harvey’s account of the life of Dr Eric Goemaere of MSF (“MSF doctor shares amazing life journey”, Tatler, April 7), speaks of a lifetime of dedication to crises all over the world, dealing with “conflict, famine and disease”. This extraordinary concept, of “doctors without borders” took him through Cambodia, Thailand, Chad, Bosnia, Syria and many other global conflict hot spots.
Dr Goemaere has now made his home in Sea Point. We are happy to have citizens of this calibre in our midst. MSF is an organisation we would surely want to support, so I am asking our local readers to join me in making a small monthly pledge so that they are able to continue their work. They do not receive funding from governments.
