The Claremont Dramatic Society and Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, based in Claremont, scooped their fair share of awards at the Cape Amateur Theatre Awards (CATA), which was held at the Milnerton Playhouse, in Milnerton, on Monday February 15. The awards are hotly contested and are seen as the Fleur du Cap of the amateur dramatic scene. Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s production The Mikado saw Marco Titus walk off lead actor in a musical, while Monika Voysey won for best supporting actress in a musical. Kristine Berg won for costumes. Claremont Dramatic Society’s Honour picked up two awards. Trish Sutton, won for lead actress in a play, while Gizelle Willows, won best supporting actress in a play. The event is the culmination of a year of travel, meetings and adjudications for the panel of eight judges, who give of their time and at their own expense, travelling to theatres across the city for the love of amateur theatre.
