In his Budget speech last week, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that excise duties on alcohol will increase between 6.7% and 8.5%. Smokers have also been hit hard, with an increase of 82c a packet of 20 cigarettes and tobacco increasing by 94c per 50g. Pipe tobacco has gone up by 27c a 25g and cigars R4.32 a 23g. The Tatler asked bar and restaurant owners how they think they will be affected by these increases.
