Rylands-based Ottoman Cricket Club celebrated its 142nd anniversary with a grand annual awards presentation at Newlands Cricket Ground at the weekend.
The event, attended by more than 200 guests, included dignitaries and cricketing luminaries in celebration of individual and team achievements throughout the season.
Among the guests were keynote speaker, the Turkish Consul General to South Africa, His Excellency Sinan Yesildag, Sedick Howa, son of the late Sacos stalwart, Hassan Howa – after whom the Ottoman clubhouse is named – and Faldiela Nagia, wife of late Anwa Nagia, the club’s first-ever Patron.
Chairman Fareed Abrahams opened the proceedings with a heartfelt address, lauding the success of the club’s first team in securing promotion to the Premier League.
The journey from relegation last season to a triumphant return to the Premier League exemplified the club’s resilience, dedication, and unwavering spirit, he said
“Our promotion is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and resilience of every individual associated with our club. From the players showcasing their skills on the field to the coaches nurturing their talents and the passionate supporters fuelling our spirits, this promotion is a collective triumph we all share,” said Abrahams
Speaking on behalf of the Turkish consulate, Yesildag, extended his congratulations to the first team and the entire club on their achievements, highlighting the strong bond between the club and the Turkish community. He also noted the significant support the club has received through the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and memorable tours to Turkey, strengthening cultural and cricketing ties.
First Team captain Mujahid Toffar, was among the big winners, taking home the coveted Sportsman of the Year award and accolades for Overall Best Batsman and First Team Best Batsman. Toffar’s stellar performances, including four centuries and a 5-wicket haul, underscored his invaluable contributions to the team’s triumphs.
“Mujahid embodies the highest standards of sportsmanship, fair play, and integrity,” said MC Faeez Davids.
“His achievements have earned him the respect and admiration of all who follow the game.”
The Player-of-the-Year and the Players’ Player-of-the-Year awards went to all-rounder Suhail Imraan, recognised for his outstanding batting average and impressive bowling prowess. The club also honoured several players for their selection in national and provincial sides, included Ismail Teladia, Riedwaan Williams, Sadiek Davids and Adnaan Begg for their selection to the SA Over-60, over-40 and WP Over-50 sides.
