He did it in real life last year, and now in Esports. Reigning World Rallycross champion Timmy Hansen, who took the 2019 WRX title in a no-holds-barred final at Killarney International Raceway in November 2019, has won the inaugural FIA WorldRX Esports virtual championship.
After three rounds – at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi on May 31, Hell in Norway on June 21 and Holjes in Sweden on June 28 – only
12 points separated the top three drivers.
Timmy Hansen had 73 points, Tom Blomqvist 67 and Timmy’s younger brother Kevin was on 61; any one of the three could take the honours at the virtual Killarney final on Sunday July 12
In the event, it was fast but erratic Shane van Gisbergen who won the fourth round of the series after an action-packed final race that saw championship leader Hansen pushed into the wall and out of contention.
He finished fourth behind Van Gisbergen, Blomqvist and local hero, Cape endurance racer, David Perel, with Jonathan Pailler fifth and last.
But that wasn’t enough to change the outcome of the championship, as Hansen finished the season on 97 points to Blomqvist’s 93, while Van Gisbergen’s superb final effort moved him up to third overall on 82 points.
