Windsor High has started a fund-raising campaign to build a new school hall for its 900 pupils.
The Buy a Brick campaign appeals to donors to pay R50 per brick. Donors who buy 20 bricks will have their family name displayed on the school walls and those who buy 40 bricks will have their family name displayed inside the new hall, and they will be entered into a lucky draw to have a high tea with actress Vinette Ebrahim who played Charmaine in the TV series, 7de Laan.
The school has grown from 600 to 900 pupils since 2020 and is in dire need of a new hall, says principal Dianne Morgan.
The current hall served as a classroom for the past four years while the school finished building five more classrooms. It can only accommodate a single grade and is not big enough for a full school assembly. Currently, Ms Morgan holds an assembly for some of the pupils in an outside quad while the deputy principal holds a separate assembly on the side of the school.
Matric exams and valedictory ceremonies also had to be held at other venues, she said.
“The vision of this new school hall is not only for the usage of the school but for the broader community where they can come together, whether it is to have a wedding, to have a market, to host sporting events or a cultural evening,” she said.
The hall would cost R11million, with the provincial education department and the Archway Foundation covering most of that, but the school had to raise R250 000.
Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Millicent Merton confirmed that Windsor High was one of seven schools selected by the department and the Archway Foundation to receive a school hall. She said the school delivered good academic results and it had submitted a strong application.
Ms Morgan said they hoped to meet their fund-raising target in the next six months.
