On Sunday October 1, which marks the beginning of Transport Month, Main Road between the Cape Town Science Centre in Observatory and the Grand Parade in the CBD will be care-free for the biggest Open Streets event in Cape Town so far.
Between 10am and 3pm, 5km of the Main Road will be open to pedestrians, creating a space for people to move, play and interact freely and safely.
While the street will be primarily allocated for people to cycle, skate or walk, there will also be a wide array of activities for everyone to take part in. Activities include games, unicycling, juggling, Acro Yoga, live performances and more at Trafalgar Park; cycle lessons for adults, elliptical cycling and a safety cycling school at the Grand Parade; martial arts, yoga, a reading corner and counselling sessions at Fairview Park; music, face painting, games and performance at the Cornerstone Institute; and art workshops, a hub for games to raise awareness about disabilities and capoeira at the event.
There will also be an opening bicycle ride led by the City’s mayoral committee member for transport and urban development, Brett Herron, departing the Cape Town Science Centre at 11am. Riding with him will be MEC for Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, a strong supporter of Open Streets, and Tasneem Essop, who was instrumental in testing the concept in 2003 – as well as a host partners and friends of Open Streets. The ride is also open to the public.
