Twenty runners who ran the Two Oceans Marathon at the weekend raised about R50 000 for Woodside Special Care Centre, says Melanie Brand, the manager of the Rondebosch East home for those with intellectual disabilities.
“We find it amazing that the runners are supporting us. It shows the interest that they have in the work we do,” she said.
Xandri Barkhuizen, 16, of Centurion, who completed her first Two Oceans half marathon on Sunday in two hours and nine minutes, helped to raise more than R6000 for the home through BackaBuddy.
“The race was amazing; I enjoyed the Capetonian vibe,” she said. “I love supporting children with disabilities.”
She said she had also raised R11 000 for Woodside during a run in Pretoria last month.
Woodside was also supported by one of its own employees, kitchen staff member Basil Davids, 64, of Crawford, who completed the half marathon on Sunday in two hours and 30 minutes.
“I always enjoy taking part in these races, and I enjoy supporting my organisation,” he said.
