A treasure trove of old trophies was recently discovered by staff at the Newlands Swimming Pool while cleaning out forgotten store rooms at the facility. One was awarded in 1904 by former Cape Town Mayor Hyman Lieberman. The trophies, which were awarded for all swimming strokes for both individual and team contests, are now going to be individually recorded and placed in a safe space. “I plan to enlist the help of swimming teams and local schools to see if we can once again use these trophies to acknowledge our sports achievers,” said ward councillor Ian Iversen, pictured.
