I’m a non-smoker and have never had the inclination or urge to smoke.
During my adolescent years, the occasional “naughty” puff, to ease my curiosity, of my parents’ “toppatjies” left in ashtrays was the closest I ever came to being a smoker.
Thankfully, I opted for athletics which does not gel with smoking.
With the unbanning of cigarette sales, the sight of smokers queuing at our local convenience store amazed me. The rush to purchase cartons of their favourite brands, not one or two packets, but consignments of their nicotine fix was mind-boggling. But such is the addiction to nicotine.
Hopefully the sales will contribute much to our ailing economy.
