The 35-year-old man accused of raping at least three UCT students near Rhodes Memorial will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on Thursday July 21.
The man appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday June 21. He was remanded in custody while the Director of Public Prosecutions decides on a trial venue.
He cannot be named until he has pleaded to the charges.
Following an attack on a woman on November 19 last year, women were raped on the path leading from the memorial towards UCT’s Upper Campus (December 11), near the Rhodes Memorial restaurant (January 11) and on the pathway leading off the a!kunta footbridge over the M3 (February 4). A fourth woman, who is not a UCT student, was robbed on Rhodes Avenue near Mostert’s Mill (January 25).
The man is charged with rape, robbery with aggravating circumstance and kidnapping, but more charges could be added.
