Rustenburg Girls’ High School Representative Council of Learners (RCL) has once again decided to run with its knitting project for 2016.
The idea is to give people a chance to learn a skill, knitting, do something relaxing and give back to various communities. Last year the project resulted, quite unexpectedly, in many collaborations between different groups.
The school community started knitting and teachers and pupils got their grandmothers and neighbours involved.
“We had women from Mez Wallach in Lakeside joining squares for us and then we were invited to join them in a Tokai Lion’s initiative to pack blankets for the Naked Baby Project. Old girls of the school involved in the 67 squares for Mandela project collected squ-ares and returned beautiful blankets to us,” said RGHS marketing manager, Geila Wills.
“Some of these lovely blankets found their way to Open Circle in Pinelands, which is a care facility catering for adults with an intellectual disability who often display challenging behaviour.
“Some went to the Transkei with a group of girls who joined the Rondebosch boys in a project they run there.”
The Lions clubs of Kirstenbosch and Sea Point assisted in turning some of the squares into blankets and delivered these to Lions charities.
On Heritage Day, Saturday September 24, the RCL is planning to display squares and blankets in the quad. If anyone who would like to donate wool or squares time, call the school on 021 696 1808.
