Police arrested a man and a woman for an alleged carjacking and kidnapping that took place in Rondebosch last Friday, March 22.
Rondebosch police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam says the incident took place around 3.20pm when the male victim sitting inside his white Chevy Spark parked outside his girlfriend’s home on the corner of Ednam and Harrow roads, Rondebosch. His girlfriend was standing outside the driver’s door.
“Suddenly, they were accosted by two males and a female on foot, who forced the female into her boyfriend’s car, then pushed the driver into the back seat, and drove away with them inside the vehicle.”
Warrant Officer Sisam says three suspects drove around with the couple for a while and then allegedly demanded petrol money. He says as the couple did not have cash or money in their banking accounts, they then took the couple’s cellphones and sold it for petrol money.
He says the male and female suspects got out of the vehicle at an unknown location and then the remaining male suspect drove to Monte Vista in Goodwood and dropped the two victims off at around 9pm.
He says the victims reported the carjacking to Goodwood police.
Warrant Officer Sisam says the vehicle was spotted by Law Enforcement in Wynberg, heading towards Diep River after they received information about the carjacked vehicle at about 11pm.
“They then stopped the white Chevy Spark, arrested a male and a female suspect, and detained them at Diep River police for carjacking. They were found in possession of a replica gas firearm, a knife, stolen clothing, and cash,” he says.
Warrant Officer Sisam says the male suspect that was arrested was previously out on correctional supervision and had a lengthy criminal record.
They appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday March 25 on charges of carjacking and kidnapping.
A third male suspect is still at large.
