The South African Pan Maths Olympiads team finished second in the olympiads, at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg on Sunday April 7. The competition assembles the top high school maths pupils from 13 African countries. Team Morocco finished first with Tunisia in third place. All six from the South African team won medals, with bronze medals won by Grade 9 pupils Juliette Roux from Herschel Girls, Emmanuel Rassou from SACS, and Alex Sinclair-Smith from Westerford High School for their overall results. The big winner was Grade 11 pupil Danielle Kleyn from Parel Vallei High School in Somerset West who won the gold medal and is the top girl overall winner for Africa. Other team members, Johannesburg Grade 11s Kgaogelo Bopape, from Horizon High School, and Andi Qu, from St John’s College, won gold and silver respectively.
