Holy Cross Primary School celebrated Mandela Day by paying tribute to all who came to its aid after a fire in February.
Elizabeth Fredericks, from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), presented the school with a box of educational books for its new library, which is still being set up.
Zonnebloem resident Rajoo Daya brought lunch for the pupils and she showed them a five-minute video she made about the school. It included clips and pictures of how the school had come through the tragedy of the fire.
“I went on the website, googled and looked for pictures. I created something they could utilise and share the experience with the pupils and their parents,” she said.
Principal Nomthandazo Zweni said the school remembered Nelson Mandela and the value he had placed on education.
Grade 2 and Grade 6 pupils also staged a short play to pay tribute to Mr Mandela.
Ms Zweni said it was fitting to have those who aided the school in its time of need present on Mandela Day so they could see the positive impact of their generosity on the pupils and staff. “We have suffered, though we are so grateful and value the sponsors and donors that have been with us through our difficult time, building a good relationship with the school,” she said.
