Groote Schuur Hospital is warning prospective job seekers to not fall prey to fake recruiters advertising hospital jobs on social media.
Since last month, five people had reported to work at the hospital only to learn they had been scammed, said Groote Schuur Hospital spokesman Alaric Jacobs.
Most of the fake positions had been for cleaners and porters, and the job seekers had paid the recruiters before accepting the job, he said.
“Our plea to job seekers is to not fall prey to these scammers, and that they should use the official recruitment channels should they be interested in any job at the hospital.”
The scammers had asked the job seekers to pay between R2000 and R3000 for a medical test or uniform.
“This week, we had a person come in who paid R2000 for a cleaning job, and we had to inform the person that it was a scam.”
Mr Jacobs said victims of the scam had been advised to report the matter to the police.
Berenice Alexander, from the hospital’s human-resources department, said under no circumstances would anyone be asked to pay for anything to work at the hospital.
Vacancies would be advertised on the provincial government’s website or in the media, and there were step-by-step guidelines for completing online job applications, she said.
Any job advertisement would include a landline phone number for queries, she said.
