Margaret Elsworth, African Scholars’ Fund patron
I founded the African Scholars’ Fund with many leading educationalists in 1970.
It was meant to be a stop-gap arrangement to help schoolchildren during the terrible days of apartheid and school disruption.
After 50 years we shall be publishing a booklet and the biggest gap in our knowledge is what happened to all our scholars.
A few we know about, and they are treasured. Some are donors to the fund.
Our children come from all over the Western Province, Eastern Province and Northern Cape – Kuruman, Umtata, Nababeep, Noupoort, Port Elizabeth, East London, Queenstown, Cala, Aberdeen, Fort Beaufort – all the cities and tiny towns – and of course all the Cape Town areas.
During the past 50 years about 40 000 schoolchildren got bursaries from this fund.
This is a personal call to them or anyone who can tell us about any of our children.
If you had a bursary while you were at school, please tell us what happened to you after that.
Perhaps you are high up in government or perhaps you are a road-sweeper, a teacher, a lawyer, a carpenter, or you might be out of work.
You might even be retired now.
