The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival’s Concert Orchestra will perform a free concert at the Silvertown Auditorium in Athlone on Sunday July 9, at noon.
The performance will be conducted by maestro Julien Benichou, recently lauded for his direction of Way of the Rain, a concert featuring Robert Redford at Carnegie Hall and repeated in Monte-Carlo in the presence of his Highness Albert II, Prince of Monaco.
At the Silvertown Auditorium, Maestro Benichou will lead a 100-piece orchestra made up of musicians from various communities of the Western Cape as well as from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and international students of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. The programme includes Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2, Mussorgsky’s Khovantchina Overture and Respighi’s Pines of Rome.
SICMF director Peter Martens says: “Musical performance and education has always played an important role in galvanising our South African communities. This is music that will inspire young and old, so families are encouraged to attend this one-hour spectacular of full symphonic splendour.”
The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival is being held from Friday June 30 to Sunday July 9 at Endler Hall, Stellenbosch University Conservatorium. For more information go to www.sicmf.co.za
