The Cape Town Society of Model and Experimental Engineers (CTSMEE), which is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year, will hold its open day and annual fundraiser on Saturday May 20 and Sunday May 21 at the club on the corner of Erin, Duke and Campground Roads in Croquet Lane, Rondebosch, from 9am to 4pm.
There will be a display of model engineering items made by the members past and present to mark the anniversary of the society which was started in 1907.
The money raised at the open day will be used for maintenance of the club house and to fund their various projects.
The club has a fully equipped workshop with lathes, milling machines and a shaper.
At the open day, there will be members carrying out various engineering tasks to demonstrate to the public how these machines work.
The N Gauge Modular section together with a Z Gauge layout will both be fully operational in the main hall.
The club’s surplus magazines and books will be on display and sold at bargain prices.
Cape Model Trains will be displaying various items of South African Railway equipment and memorabilia which will also be for sale and there will be a demonstration of how toy soldiers and canons are made. Refreshments will be on sale. Entry will be R20 for adults and R10 for pupils. Children under the age of five enter free. There will be rides for the children on the 5in gauge live steam engine from 9am to noon and from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Rides cost R5.
