After a short hiatus, the Harfield Village Carnival returns to the area this Saturday to mark its 10th anniversary.
The festivities along Second Avenue, will start at 9am on Saturday April 14, with organisers hoping to attract as many as the 10 000 it did in 2016 – or even more.
Apart from being a fun event for the community, the carnival, co-hosted by the Harfield Village Community Improvement District (HVCID) and the Harfield Village Association (HVA), is also being held to raise funds for safety initiatives in the village.
“HVCID and HVA are anxious to jumpstart their camera initiative fund and accordingly all funds generated by the carnival will be spent on improving the overall security of the Village primarily through the installation and monitoring of License Plate Recognition and overview cameras,” said HVCID chairman, Bruce Burmeister.
Ward 58 councillor, Sharon Cottle, will preside over the official opening of the carnival at 11am.
“Harfield Village Carnival promotes community spirit among residents and visitors from neighbouring areas. The carnival has always been fun and I enjoy going to see what is on offer at all the stalls on the day,” she said.
“This year is also very exciting as the proceeds received from the carnival will go towards the Harfield Village Community Improvement District camera initiative.
“For the kids there will be a jumping castle and ball pond for toddlers, there will be a face painter, a glitter tattoo artist, a magician, a clown, a balloon artist and a craft station. Adults can look forward to entertainment from Good Hope FM, performances by The Avenues band, some salsa and bachata dancing from Evolution Dance at Zapata restaurant, while DJs Gavin and Marc will play music at the Home bar and restaurant from the afternoon until late.”
Many of the restaurants will be open from 9am until late while the vendors will be available from 9am until 5pm only.
Admission is free and parking will be available at Rosmead Primary School, Grassfield Road and St James Church and Epsom Street.
