Rosedale Senior Centre will hold a morning market – it’s first since lockdown – on Saturday September 3, in support of its residents, many of whom struggle financially.
Rosedale was started in the 1970s as an independent-living facility under the management of the SA Legion and it has catered mostly for retired military veterans.
The Legion is part of the international organisation which provides support, comradeship, financial and other assistance to veterans and their dependants
Rosedale’s committee chairwoman, Del Davies, said the rising cost of living had made it more difficult for them to hold fund-raisers.
“A lot of our residents are poor and rely on government funds. This is an opportunity for them to use their talents to be able to put some money in their own pockets,” she said.
Resident and committee member Sue Gow said they had previously held a rummage sale a few times a year.
“It’s hard to fund-raise because we can’t make things too expensive, otherwise people won’t buy them,” she said.
Ms Gow said they also needed volunteers to help collect for their Poppy Day fund-raiser on Saturday November 11.
“Poppy Day is when the South African Legion holds a street collection to raise funds to assist in the welfare work among military veterans, and it annually takes place on the Saturday nearest to Remembrance Day. When you buy a poppy, you are paying tribute to those who died, and are helping those who are left and bear the scars of war,” she explained.

The market will take place at the centre, in Lower Nursery Road, from 9.30am till 12.30pm. For more information, contact Ms Gow at 083 467 9995 or Ms Davies at 083 658 1018.
