Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School pupils donated R20 000 to Gift of the Givers for victims of the Türkiye-Syria earthquake.
The foundation phase pupils, Ayesha and Nabiha January, Zaria Naidoo, Saffiyah Mohamed, Nuha Sayeed and Amira Khan, raised the money through a cake sale and donations. They handed over the money on Saturday February 18.
Haleema January said that she and the other parents had planned to do monthly initiatives with their children, and they had started with the crisis in Türkiye and Syria.
Niha’s mother, Salma Mohomed, said that the cause hit close to home for her because children and parents were among the victims. She encouraged people to donate to Gift of the Givers because they were “very transparent” and “always there to serve”.
Grade 3 pupil Amira said: “I think it’s a good thing not to only think about ourselves and think about everyone around us.”
Dr Naeem Kathrada, from Gift of the Givers, said: “If children at this age can start thinking of others less fortunate than them,it will make a big impact.”
