South African-born photographer Tessa Frootko Gordon will be exhibiting her work at the UCT Irma Stern Museum until to Saturday May 4. The exhibition features images Gordon made on Zanzibar last year. Museum spokeswoman Mary van Blommestein says Gordon had Stern’s Zanzibar in mind when visiting the island for the first time in 2018, some 50 years on. “She went in search of Irma’s Zanzibar as she discovered her own through photographs of Stone Town and the East Coast,” said Ms Van Blommestein. Gordon, who is based in Boston, said: “I would not have known of Zanzibar had it not been for the art of Irma Stern.” Ms Van Blommestein said the work in progress was a homage to Irma Stern and it was appropriately exhibited in Irma’s house, the UCT Irma Stern Museum, in Cecil Road, Rosebank. The museum is open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 10am until 5pm and on Saturdays from 10am until 2pm. It’s closed on public holidays. Visit www.irmasternmuseum.org.za for details.
