Citizens FC’s victory saw them booking their spot in this year’s quarter-finals in a spectacular fashion, beating Jamestown United 8-7 on penalties, in Wynberg.
Joining the Langa side in the top eight are Heideveld’s Young Pirates, Glendene United, Rondebosch’s Rygersdal FC, Stephanian Ottery, Melchester United, Beacon Spurs and Two for Joy, who Citizens will face in their quarter-final clash.
Their match against Jamestown ended in a 1-all draw after attacking midfielder Thabo Zaba scored a dramatic late equaliser to force the match into the spot kicks.
Citizens booked their spot in the last 16 after beating New Crossroads’ Hustlas FC 2-1 in the last round of 32, in Grassy Park, last month.
Before that, Citizens beat Metropolitan LFA’s Blue Gum United 5-1 in front of their home supporters in Bonteheuwel, in the last round of 64.
Coach Simpiwe Gaqazele said their match against Blue Gum was turning point for Citizens as they started believing they could go all the way.
Looking ahead at the quarter-finals, Gaqazele said: “We want to keep our shape from the back, through to the middle up to the front line so that our opponents do not get an opportunity to dictate the way we play.
* Meanwhile, Young Pirates, beat Manenberg’s Florentina 5-4 on penalties after playing to a 2-all draw at the Rooikrans sports complex, in Grassy Park, at the weekend.
Pirates will have their work cut out when they face Stephanian Ottery in their upcoming quarter-final clash. Stephs beat United FC 6-0 to book their spot in the quarters.
Glendene will face Melchester to round up the quarter-final fixtures. Glendene beat Grassy Park United 4-2 on penalties after playing to a 1-all draw. Melchester secured their spot after beating former champions Silver Spurs 3-1.
* In the under-18 division, Glendene United, Old Mutual FC, Hellenic FC, Everton Spurs, Eastern Rovers, Masidlale, Milano United and Junior Pirates will battle it out in their respective quarter-finals.
* In the women’s division, champions RV United, Virgo Ladies, Santos FC, UWC, Heideveld Female Football Academy, Burnley, Ikamva and Portia have booked their spots in the quarters.
