This year the Slave Route Challenge is being held again after a three-year hiatus. The last race was held in 2020 just before the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to all mass participation events.
This year’s instalment, which takes place on Sunday May 28, features a half marathon, a 10km run, 10km walk and a 5km fun run/walk, starting outside City Hall and finishing at the Grand Parade.
The race beneficiary is the Early Learning Resource Unit (ELRU), a Lansdowne-based NGO which focuses on improving the lives of children in poor and vulnerable communities.
The race route passes a number of historical landmarks, including, The Castle of Good Hope, District 6, Hurling Swing Pump, SA Jewish Museum, Slave Bell, The Company’s Garden, Parliament, St George’s Cathedral, Palm Street Mosque, Dorp Street Mosque, Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, Gallows Hill, Fort Wynyard, Prestwich Memorial, Iziko Slave Lodge, Slave Tree Plaque, Palestine Museum and finishes on the Grand Parade where the Whipping Post used to be.
Each year the race has a commemorative medal and this year it features Table Mountain with its aerial cable car.
