With over 35 wins and just five losses in her amateur career, lightweight boxer Siyamthanda Njikelana is set on putting Philippi on the map.
Training under coach Zolani Yako at Save The Youth Boxing Club, Njikelana will compete in a white-collar boxing tournament at the Armoury Boxing Club in Woodstock on Friday, August 16.
On National Women’s Day, she added another victory to her record at the Future Champs Women’s Day Boxing Tournament held at the Site C taxi rank in Khayelitsha.
Njikelana said the boxing bug bit her two years ago after her friends introduced her to the sport.
“I was with my friends this one afternoon and they said they are going to the boxing gym. I joined them and I have never stopped boxing. On Monday (August 12) I am back at the gym. I am always ready. I want to make a name in the lightweight division,” she said.
Coach Yako said Friday’s visit to The Armoury Boxing Club “is going to be a war” for his hungry fighter. She will be going up against Carla “Killer Queen” Coetzee.
“The Women’s Day event was great.I had 10 kids fighting and eight won, with knockouts. We are grateful to be invited here. Now we take our focus to Friday’s fight in Woodstock,“ said Yako.
