Since everything is bigger in boxing, it is fitting that Athenkosi Plaatjies has bold ambitions.
Viper, as he is known in the ring, is undefeated in his three professional fights. He has 260 amateur fights and only 16 losses under his belt.
“I’m feeling good. I’ve just got back from a morning session at the gym. I’ve received a lot of experience from the fight with Odwa Gaxa. He is a knockout specialist. His record is amazing. What I saw is, I need to push more,” said Plaatjies, after a third round knockout win at the International Convention Centre, in East London, against Gaxa, from Duncan Village, a fortnight ago.
Viper has just moved from Cape Town to King Williams Town, training at Eluxolweni Boxing Club, with coach Khangelani Jack.
“He was our coach that got us to be seen by the SA amateur team,” he said.
So now is the time he redefines himself – as a fighter and as a role model to children from his hometown of Kariega (Uitenhage).
“I’m here to represent and push for my hometown. I want to see it change because the future is there but there aren’t many promoters, hence I moved to Cape Town to train with coach Emil Brice and now King Williams Town. I want to instil the spirit of hope and possibility. I will push until I make it,” said Plaatjies.
He is now focusing on a tournament that will be held by Xaba Promotions in February next year.
“I am currently ranked sixth according to BoxRec. The goal is to tap into the top five and then challenge for the SA title.”
