Claire Terblanche, head coach of the Western Province Women’s cricket team, has urged communities, especially woman and girls to attend the Women’s T20 World Cup which starts on Friday February 10 at Newlands.

South Africa comes up against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the tournament which features the 10 top nations in the sport. The picturesque Newlands ground will also host the semi-final as well as the final on Sunday February 26.

The national team includes five players from the Western Province, Nadine de Klerk, Lara Goodall, Sinalo Jafta, Delmi Tucker and Laura Wolvaardt.

“It is always a privilege and honour to have our WP Women wearing the green and gold. Hosting the World Cup on home soil is going to be extra special and we are always proud of our ladies achievements. We hope they put on a show for the public,” said Terblanche.

She also believes by hosting the event it will have a huge effect on how the sport is being perceived, because it’s not only boys who can play cricket.

“I hope seeing women play, inspires our young generation to get involved in the game,” she added

“We can only grow our female athlete space by showing more support for all women’s sport, and show our daughters a positive way of life through sport. Get out and get your tickets and support our women in sport,” said a bubbling Terblanche.

Two games are scheduled for Boland for on Saturday while action returns to Newlands on Sunday. Tickets available at the gates.

The full team is: Captain, Suné Luus (Titans), Chloé Tryon (Dolphins) (Vice-Captain), Anneke Bosch (North West Dragons), Tazmin Brits (Garden Route Badgers), Nadine de Klerk (Western Province), Annerie Dercksen (Garden Route Badgers), Lara Goodall (Western Province), Shabnim Ismail (Dolphins), Sinalo Jafta (Western Province), Marizanne Kapp (Eastern Province), Ayabonga Khaka (Lions), Masabata Klaas (North West Dragons), Nonkululeko Mlaba (Dolphins), Delmi Tucker (Western Province), and Laura Wolvaardt (Western Province).
