False Bay bags Super League A title

False Bay waled away with the SLA title after routing Sir Lowrians.

False Bay RFC were crowned Super League A champions when they easily overcame a struggling Sir Lowrians RFC on Saturday. The final score was 85-12.

It is the first time in 44 years that the Constantia club has secured the golden chalice of WP Club Rugby. Victory celebrations were brought forward by a couple of twists and turns in the schedule over the last fortnight.

SLA titles have been rare in Constantia, and the Bay were desperate to clinch their first in more than four decades in front of their loyal supporters. Their opponents, Sir Lowrians, have been experiencing challenges and forfeited their two previous matches.

The distinct possibility of the Bay being all dressed up with nowhere to go existed, and it is here where Sir Lowrians deserve accolades. The Helderberg-based team contested with passion, resilient in the face of wave after wave of Bay attackers.

In all, False Bay scored 13 tries, seven of them by their wings Roemark Smith (4) and Danie Roux (3).

* In other action, SK Walmers bounced back on the victory trail in convincing style following a bonus point 36-19 WPRFU Super League A win over Kuils River at Green Point Track on Saturday.

* Elsewhere, a try in injury time by long-serving No 8 Jody Birch enabled Hamilton to score a narrow win over UWC at Stephan Oval. Although both sides scored four tries apiece it was the boot of Earl Lewis, the stand-in Hamiltons fly half, that proved decisive for his side.

* Tygerberg look on course for the runners-up spot following their easy 59-22 win over Primrose at Rosmead.

The visitors scored nine tries to three after leading 31-10 at the interval. The Tygers exploited a lethargic Primrose defence, scoring three tries in the opening stanza of the game. Primrose did well to restrict the halftime score to 31-10 and never gave up trying.

Veteran lock Sizwe July worked hard in the tight-loose, while Tasreeq Omar was their star performer scoring a brace of tries.
