In another Premier League match at the weekend Cape Town CC beat Brackenfell by 123 runs.
Cape Town won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a monstrous 226/7 runs that would prove to be very difficult for the visitors.
It was a day of good batting and good bowling by Cape Town. Cape Town opening batsman William Hantam scored 66 runs before being runout. Third-place batsman Mathew Goles scored 65 runs off 90 balls.
Cape Town’s opening bowler Brendan Young picked up 4/32, Darren Rolfe got 3/40 and Bradley Petersen grabbed 2/11 runs, while Matthew Olsen recorded 1/20 runs.
Cape Town bowled Brackenfell for 103 runs, to win by 123 runs.
Meanwhile, Claremont were busy outschooling Strandfontein down the road. They scored a problematic 291/6 in 50 overs. Claremont won the toss and had a slow start, but a middle order partnership saw Matthew de Villiers score an unbeaten century (103) just off 79 balls.
His teammate Josh Breed scored 74 runs off 111 balls. Claremont’s overall performance on the day shocked and crippled Strandfontein. They bowled out the visitors for 38 runs.
Marvin Williams picked up six wickets (6/18 runs) and Gavin Dickenson grabbed 2/20 runs to help their team win by 253 runs.
In other action, Rondebosch were stung by UWC at home. UWC won the toss and elected to bat against a strong Rondebosch bowling attack. UWC posted 206/6. However, the students were ready for the action.
UWC’s opening batsman Givon Christians scored 55 runs before falling victim to Simphiwe Yiba’s safe hands and Shabir Mallie’s bowling.
National batsman Zubayr Hamza scored 91 runs before being sent back to the rafters with an LBW by Rondebosch’s Myolisi Fumba.
Rondebosch opening bowler Wesley Bedja got 3/35. Fumba picked up 2/32.
Grant Edmeades, the highest scorer for Rondebosch on the day, scored 41 runs off 61 balls before he was bowled out by Jason Smith.
First change bowler Jason Smith and Kyle Pluke had a good day with the ball for UWC. Smith picked up 3/21 runs and Pluke received 2/24 runs.
Rondebosch were bowled out for 111 to give UWC a 95-run victory.
