Groote Schuur Hospital has been celebrating Wayde van Niekerk’s gold medal at the Olympics along with all South Africans. According to Groote Schuur spokesperson, Alaric Jacobs, Van Niekerk is an icon for premature babies having been born premature himself. “Wayde generously donated R500 000 to the Newborns Trust earlier this year, which has shown his amazing support and commitment to improving the lives of the many prematurely born babies in our care,” Mr Jacobs said. “To honour Wayde and show him our continued support, Groote Schuur arranged for staff to dress in green and gold and pose with a large congratulatory banner last Friday, August 19. We will be forwarding this photograph to Wayde.”
