Participants in a fund-raiser for the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind completed more than 13 million steps and raised over R300 000.
The Step Up for Guide-Dogs Walkathon took place from Monday May 11 to Monday May 18.
Lindsey Concer, fund-raising manager for the association’s Claremont branch, said Covid-19 had caused the cancellation of several fund-raisers.
“We needed to make up for all the income we were losing at this time. Our work continues, our dogs still need food, medical care and training which all requires funding.”
Participants – with or without their dogs – could take part in their homes or during the 6am to 9am exercise window. The challenge was for each of them to do 100 000 steps in eight days and raise R500 or more.
Jackie Quail, the branch’s event manager, said they were thrilled with the response.
“We had over 200 participants nationwide who collectively took
13 102 880 steps and raised just over R300 000.”
Judith Ancketill, of Newlands, is a volunteer puppy raiser for the organisation. She said she had never taken part in such a charity drive before but knew she had to get involved in this one.
“The SA Guide Dog Association does the most incredible work and their staff are among the most dedicated and loyal people I have ever met.”
