Vehicle theft on the increase, warns police

There has been an increase in vehicle thefts in Rondebosch, with four having been stolen in the past week.

Spokesman for Rondebosch police station, Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam said on Monday June 3, a white Ford Bakkie was reported stolen in Main Road, Rondebosch; on Tuesday June 4, a white VW Polo was stolen at 8am when it was parked in Linkoping Road; on Wednesday June 5 at 9pm a metallic grey VW Polo was stolen near Boundary Road in Newlands; and then at 10pm a silver Toyota Yaris was stolen from Baxter Road, on UCT’s lower campus.

Rondebosch station commander, Lieutenant Colonel, Barbara Breedt urged residents to park their vehicles inside the garage or behind locked gates if possible.

“We understand the limited amount of parking available at apartments but please ensure that vehicles parking along the side of the road are locked and all electronic security devices are activated,” she said.

Lieutenant Colonel Breedt said all vehicles should be parked in well-lit areas and that all valuables in the cars should be removed from plain view.
