The University of Cape Town (UCT) will accommodate students who were not able to write their exams last year by hosting a mini-semester which runs from Tuesday January 3 until Friday January 20.
This is according to UCT media liaison Azwi Mufamadi who said the “mini-semester” will be hosted for faculties needing to have “contact sessions” to cover the work that was not covered during the last few weeks of the year.
“The mini-semester will be followed by deferred exams set for Monday January 23 to Friday February 10,” he explained.
Mr Mufamadi said orientation and registration were scheduled to take place between Monday February 27 and Friday March 10.
The university will officially re-open on Monday March 13.
“The university will only have new student numbers after registration. UCT is expecting a total student population of approximately 28 000 students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in 2017, with 4 200 of these being first-year students,” he explained.
Despite not being able to provide the Tatler with the exact number of students who will attend the make-up classes, he said the university can confirm that students from the faculties of humanities, engineering, the built environment and health sciences were scheduled to attend the “mini-semester”.
Following last year’s violent #feesmustfall protests Mr Mufamadi told the Tatler that the university will not be employing additional security on campus.
