Two men were fatally shot in Rosmead Avenue, Kenilworth, on Wednesday August 7 which police believe could be gang-related.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk, says the shooting occurred around 1.30pm in Rosmead Avenue on the corner of Dingle Avenue and Jesmond Road.
Captain Van Wyk said, according to reports, the men who were shot in a white Toyota Yaris vehicle were aged 23 and 28, while a woman who was in the car was also injured, though her injuries are unknown. He says a 16-year-old boy who was also in the car did not sustain any injuries.
“The injured woman was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and the motive is believed to be gang-related,” he says.
Captain Van Wyk says that Claremont police are investigating two counts of murder and attempted murder and this case docket will also be transferred to SAPS’ Anti-Gang Unit for further investigation.
Claremont Community Policing Forum chairperson for sub sector 1 and sub sector 4, Penny Owens, said: “It is obviously a grave concern that gangsters feel it’s their right to execute two people in public where innocent bystanders or motorists could have been injured or worse.”
She added that it is unacceptable that people feel the need to settle matters in this fashion, with a blatant disregard for innocent lives.
“Thankfully it is not a common occurrence in this part of the peninsula and I urge members of the public to report suspicious vehicles and individuals to police so matters can be followed up accordingly,” she says.
