■ School of Hope teacher Rasiet Kayvan won the Western Cape High School category of the Woolworths and MySchool Teacher’s Day Competition and came second overall, thanks to a nomination from pupil Najmiyah Wallace. Mr Kayvan beat 33 835 nominees. In her motivation letter, Najmiyah, told of how Mr Kayvan would not give up on her when her home circumstances had all but brought her to her knees and she had no belief in her ability to get through matric. Mr Kayvan has been at the Observatory school for four years and teaches consumer studies and tourism to Grades 10 to 12 pupils.
