Sans Souci Girls’ High School handed over 4500 tins of food to Gift of the Givers on Monday.
The food will be used to support earthquake victims in Türkiye and Syria.
Sans Souci matric pupil Chloe Jooste led the food drive, which started more than a month ago (“Sans Souci campaign helps quake victims,” Southern Suburbs Tatler, March 9)
“I felt like I did something good and feel it will be of good help to Syria and Türkiye and just hope that while many people are recovering from the after effects of the earthquake they will continue to get help from other campaigns,” she said.
Parents, businesses, religious institutions and Norman Henshilwood High School’s Interact Society all supported the campaign.
Sans Souci Girls’ High School acting principal Shirley Humphreys said she was proud that the school could make an impact in another country. “We also want to look around and be of help to disasters here in South Africa as well,” she added.
Gift of the Givers project manager Ali Sablay said: “We would like to thank Sans Souci for going the extra mile because one of the concerns of the earthquake was shortage of food and blankets and this will go a long way to making a difference in their lives.”
Retired High Court judge Siraj Desai, who also made a donation to the campaign, praised the school’s pupils for defending “our common humanity” and said: “From amongst you must emerge a leadership for the future. You demonstrated it in a small way, you must build on this.”
