Eleven people have graduated from an office-administration training course thanks to bursaries from the South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF).
The students – aged 18 to 49 and coming from Heideveld, Manenberg, Bonteheuwel, Mitchell’s Plain, Hanover Park and Retreat – started the course at the Computers and Development (CAD) Training Centre in Observatory, at the beginning of August and graduated on Wednesday September 23.
According Insaaf Osman, Sanzaf’s vocational training co-ordinator, the course was usually held for 20 people but that number had to be cut because of Covid-19.
“They had to practise physical distancing as well as wearing masks in the classroom,” she said, adding that the participants had gone to all their classes.
One of the course graduates, Zaynab Abrahams, of Athlone, recently matriculated and said the course had helped her use Microsoft’s Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook software and learn customer service and phone etiquette.
“It was very interesting, the lecturers were helpful, and it was a great learning experience.”
Mujahied Arendse, of Mitchell’s Plain, said Sanzaf had covered their travel costs and had offered to help them send out CVs.
Sanzaf regional manager Shafiek Barendse said the students had shown great commitment to the training.
“Some of them have children while others are using transport from various areas, so their attendance rate has been great,” he said.
