Streets in the Southern Suburbs on day one of Lockdown

Park Road, Rondebosch next to the Rondebosch common.

Many southern suburbs streets which are normally bustling with activity were quiet on the first day of the nationwide lockdown today, Friday March 27.

In Park Road, alongside the Rondebosch Common, where residents usually enjoy jogging and walking their dogs, there was not a soul in sight.

Pick ‘n Pay at Fountain Centre in Main Road was strict on social distancing, with people queuing more than a metre apart outside the shop.

When it was their turn, their hands and baskets were sanitised.

Mowbray Main Road, normally full of buses and taxis, was quiet, while in Victoria Road, Woodstock, a few cars were parked outside the police station.

Those who went inside the station also had their hands disinfected and the police were monitoring the area.

In Main Road, Claremont, close to Cavendish Square, the street was completely empty and on the corner of Kildare and Main Street, Newlands, restaurants and fancy clothing stores were completely deserted.
