Thousands of spectators lined city-centre roads and the Grand Parade on Saturday January 4 to watch the annual Tweede Nuwejaar minstrel carnival. Usually held on January 2, it was shifted to January 4 this year as the sunset of January 2 coincided with the start of Jum’ah (Friday prayers) for Muslims. Organised by the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association, the event featured 35 troupes and some 13 000 minstrels.
