Westerford High School pupils took part in a service day last month to help clean up the community and the environment. The Grade 9s and 10s did clean-ups at Zandvlei Nature Reserve and the Liesbeek River, respectively. The Grade 11s were stationed at Tokai Forest where they cleared paths and removed alien vegetation while also learning about the value of indigenous plants and trees. The Grade 8s stayed at the school where they sanded desks, made sandwiches, put together care packages and made sleeping bags from newspapers for the homeless. The matrics could choose from several outreach activities, including Streetscapes, an urban-greening project helping destitute people; the elderly at Huis Luckhoff; and the SPCA. The day ended with a music concert, Kunika, which means “to give” in isiXhosa. Held at the school, the concert included local bands, CrossCurrent, Mobbing Bali as well as a performance from the Westerfordian DJing Duo.
