A hub of local museums will open their doors to the public this week, in celebration of International Museum Day (IMD) which is held every year on or around May 18.
The hub has been created by the Education Museum, the Forum for School Museums and Archives; Oude Wijnberg Museum; Rondebosch Boys’ High; Bishops and SACS. Many of these schools have rich, proud histories, famous past pupils, stories and photographs to share. However, their displays are not generally accessible to the public. This year, they are opening their doors to the public for free to showcase the heritage and traditions. The theme for this year is, Museums as Cultural Hubs – the Future of Tradition.
The museums and times are: Bishops (Diocesan College) Museum, 65 Campground Road, Rondebosch, today Thursday May 16 and Friday May 17, from 8am to 1pm – by appointment on 021 659 1000; SACS High School Museum, Newlands Avenue, today Thursday May 16 and Friday May 17, from 9am to 3pm by appointment on 021 689 4164; Education Museum, 9 Aliwal Rod, Wynberg from 9am to noon; Oude Wijnberg Museum, Kaplan House, off De Villiers Road from 9am to noon; Wynberg Boys’ High School from 9am to noon and Rondebosch Boys’ High School Museum, Canigou Avenue, from 9am to noon.
