A proposal to rename one of the two Grace roads in Claremont could soon be put to the public for comment.
The Sub-council 20 meeting on Wednesday January 22 accepted Ward 59 councillor Ian Iversen’s motion to do this.
Mr Iversen said the two Grace roads, which are less than 1km apart, had caused a lot of confusion over the years.
The one Grace Road has 32 homes in it, the other has nine.
“The situation has caused endless issues for residents as posts could easily be delivered to the wrong address since the road names are located within the same suburb,” he said.
Mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, said a formal proposal for the name change had to be submitted to the City for consideration.
A name change needs a public participation process and approval by full council.
According to Ms Nieuwoudt, the mayoral committee members will discuss the proposal and recommend it for public participation if it complies with the City’s naming policy.
A report on the outcome of the public-comment period is considered by the mayoral committee, which then makes a recommendation to council for a final decision.
Grace Road between Herschel Road and Struben Road has been in existence before 1906 as it appears on a 1906 plan of the area. Grace Road off Claremont Avenue is not visible on the 1906 plan but predates 1944 as it is on an area plan for that year.
Sub-council also supported the 10-year lease renewal for the 4th Claremont Scouts Group at Almond Street, Newlands; 2nd Claremont Scouts Group at Belvedere Road. Claremont and The Scouts Association of South Africa on the corner of Bowwood and Thelma roads, Claremont, at a rental fee of R920 per annum.
Sub-council also approved the liquor trading extension of Wine Tonight in Kenilworth from 6pm to 8pm from Mondays to Saturdays and 11am to 6pm on Sundays, and Tops at Rosmead trading from 6pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 6pm on Sundays.
