Red Cross receives much-needed donation

The haematology oncology unit at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital will get a much-needed boost thanks to a donation from an Athlone-based company.

Voltamx Electrical Wholesalers held a Bollywood-inspired fund-raiser for the hospital last month and handed over a cheque for R150 000 to the hospital on Thursday July 11.

Fund-raiser officer Pauline Solomons said the funds would be used for the 21-bed haematology oncology unit.

“The ward is a place that holds stories of courage, stories of survival, stories of loss and stories of unexpected triumph over this disease. But most importantly, it’s home to the most remarkable children you will ever meet, who fearlessly fight a battle most adults could not.”

Ms Solomons said the hospital had maintained its ethos of “child first” since 1956.

“With 280 beds and 1 000 plus dedicated staff, the hospital celebrates the lives of thousands of
children who have been healed and sent home to enjoy a normal childhood free of drips, hospital beds and pain. Managing more than 250 000 patient visits every year, it has given these children a second chance in life.”
