Woodside Special Care Centre in Rondebosch East has started a new fund-raiser to help get the home for people with special needs through the Covid-19 crisis.
Run5Nominate5Donate50 on BackaBuddy encourages the public to post social-media pictures of themselves running or walking for 5km during the 6am to 9am exercise window.
Participants can post the pictures on the centre’s Facebook page or tag them on Instagram or they can put them on their own personal pages and tag Woodside.
They make a R50 donation and then nominate five others to do the same.
According to Woodside fund-raising manager Clive Obery, the non-profit home cares for 82 profoundly intellectually disabled children and young adults and it depends on fund-raising.
During lockdown, more than 30 staff have been sleeping over at Woodside to help the vulnerable residents (“Staff sleep at care centre during lockdown,” Southern Suburbs Tatler, April 9).
“Because of Covid-19, we had to cancel the Cavendish Square charity book sale, their high tea event, a charity golf day, the children’s Christmas musical event is still in doubt, and many other events all because of having to ensure that there are no large gatherings,” he said.
The cancelled events mean the home had lost out on about R800 000, he said.
