Young musos from schools across the southern suburbs had their moment to shine during an annual week-long music festival at Sans Souci Girls’ High School.
The Festival for Arts, Culture, Exhibitions, Technology and Science (FACETS) took place from Thursday April 19 up till last Thursday.
The festival included various genres, but Sans Souci principal, Ruschda O Shea, said it was about more than “just playing instruments and singing and competing. It was also a chance for pupils, teachers and parents from different schools to meet and experience the many hours pupils put into perfecting their performances.
Mbaliyethu Gqubela, a Grade 11 flautist from Sans Souci Orchestra, said: “What I like about the festival is that we get to see other schools perform and being in a musical group helps as we learn to get along.”
Other schools taking part included SACS, Wynberg Girls, Rustenburg Girls, Springfield Convent, St Cyprian’s, Rondebosch Boys’ Prep and Cannons Creek.
A R1 000 prize was up for grabs in eight different categories. The winners of the prize were SACS High School Choir, Sans Souci Vocal Ensemble, Rondebosch Boys’ Prep String Ensemble, Masi Outreach Senior String Ensemble, SACS Junior School Concert Band, Rondebosch Boys’ Prep Jazz Band and SACS High Concert Band, while the prize for the primary school choir was shared by Edgemead Primary and Rondebosch Boys’ Prep Junior Choir.
