Protest against climate change

Youth gather at the Parade before handing over a memorandum.

Hundreds of youth marched to City Hall on Friday June 14 to hand over a memorandum demanding government take action on climate change.

Pupils from church youth groups and schools from all over the city joined the African Climate Youth Alliance for the global Fridays for Future youth climate protest.

The youth protesters handed a memorandum over to Marian Nieuwoudt, mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment.

The memorandum demanded that the government declares publicly that there is a “climate crisis”, puts a moratorium in place on all new coal, gas and oil mining licences, converts the electricity sector to run completely on renewable energy by 2030, and creates a mandatory education curriculum about climate change and its effects on South Africa for all schools.
