Councillor Mark RH Kleinschmidt, Kenwyn
On September 17, 2017, I started participating in road running races and joined the MSA Multisport Running Club.
During races, I noticed some runners with earphones connected to their mobile devices. They were listening to up-tempo music which encouraged them to jog to the beat of the tempo, resulting in a diminished ability to hear oncoming vehicles.
Race conveners have requested runners to refrain from this habit.
More so, I noticed that pedestrians also have the same habit of walking with earphones plugged in. The danger is that the plugged in earphones diminishes one’s ability to hear oncoming vehicles or potential attackers, and thus poses a huge safety and security risk.
Be warned when plugging in earphones – it may cost you dearly.
